I want to look for somatic motorneurons in the prostatic neurovascular bundle using immunohistochemistry. Is there a specific marker that can help differentig these motor neurons from autonomic or sensory fibers?
Two. You can use ATF-3 in combination with ChAT after injury of the nerve that innervate the prostatic region. ATF-3 is over expressed after axotomy. I think ATF-3 is not expressed by parasympathetic neurons (check it). ChAT is not expressed by sensory neurons.
Try ChAT, or CGRP as an alternative. You may also wish to try transganglionic/retrograde labelling by injecting CTb into the peripheral nerve, but this is an added level of complexity.
ChAT is a marker for somatic motor neuron, if one can clearly define it as somatic motor neuron. The paraysmpathic and some interneurons are ChAT immono-possitive. A more espcific marker is HB9.
