We hear a lot about medication’s side effects. This is important as there are potentially many, some being severe, and pharmaceutical companies have not always played the game of transparency, which is hardly surprising when big money is in play.

This being said, what are the alternatives? Emphatic support always has to be offered; exercise, healthy diet and good sleep habits are also to be discussed, psycho-education, family and marital support. But in many instances, notably in severe mental disorders, this is largely not sufficient.

Psychotherapy is the main alternative (or used in combination). It can be very effective, for sure. Now, it is not always available, has to be done by competent and experienced (and empathetic) therapists (same for medication) and interestingly patients are not always interested! In our 2nd-3rd line program on depressive disorders, we offer psychotherapy to most patients but many of them refuse or stop after some sessions. But more importantly, we don’t know much about psychotherapy’s side effects. Can we be iatrogenic with psychotherapy? it seems like nobody ever discuss this. Thanks for your opinion.
