We are curious if somebody already solved safety issues for vehicles participating in public traffic without a permanent human monitoring, either by a safety driver inside the car (e.g. TU Braunschweig - Stadtpilot, Google - Self-Driving Car, Tesla - Autopilot) - or from outside (e.g. Audi - Racepilot, WEpods).

You forgot the Bertha Benz memorial drive. So far all the cars were driving in public traffic always with safety drivers.
So far no serious demonstration was shown without a safety driver.
Google is pobabaly soon trying to drive without a safety driver but only until 25 mph. This is currently not allowed by law.

I did not forget the Bertha Benz Drive, because my intention was not to list all projects from the past - there are already several dozens with safety driver.
I'm not sure about the research activities in the Asian countries.
In fact, the WEpods should be already driving in public traffic without a onboard safety driver, but they use a remote monitoring with a camera system submitting images to a control room. As this is still permament monitoring, I would classify the system as SAE Level 2.

As far I know, WEpods are not yet driving. Another interesting project in this sense (although strictly speaking not autonomous driving in urban environment) is Hubrina project, which was running two 400hp tractors in a master-slave configuration with a single driver. Hi, I'm sorry to hear that WEpods are not yet driving. My last information was, that they wanted to start in November.
Nevertheless, it seems that there is still no project - even a very special application or functional range - which shows unsupervised operation.
I am presently working towards an autonomous vehicle convoy control with and without safety driver.

We heard about a lot projects for convoi driving. All of them were with a safety driver in the following vehicles. Can you provide us with some more information about your project?
In the project aFAS we are aiming towards an unmanned protective vehicle for highway construction sites on the hard shoulder. Maybe this is interesting for you, too. We want to drive without a safety driver and without human supervision.
