I know Bruce Paddock, Program Manager Stroke Services, Ambulance Service of NSW presented on the FAST positive program at the RUral Health and Research Congress last year.
There is a neurologist, James Grotta, who has an acute stroke ambulance and actually rides in the ambulance when pts are seen. They have a CT scanner in the ambulance. He is at the university of Texas Medical School in Houston.
We have an excellent paramedic program at our facility and our new paramedic director is looking to develop some research networks to have our large EMS system in Ohio more involved in research. The state of Ohio EMS director is also my colleague so email me if you are interested in developing a network.
I know some paramedics that are doing research on Stroke in pre-hospital setting, but their work often does not translate in an article, because in Italy they are not interested to publish the result, but to use that results. Most of my "Stroke Articles" (that you can see in my page ) were done with their help on operative scene or in Rescue Medical Dispatch Center (118 in Italy).
If you need something about Stroke emergencies in pre-hospital setting, please ask to me and i hope to give you good answers to your questions.
I'm aware of one researcher in Australia who is early in his PhD candidature who is looking at pre-hospital screening tools. I've set up a closed Facebook group to connect postgraduate students who are involved in research in paramedicine. We have 24 members so far and I've found there has been some success in not doubling up in like research topics. Here's the intro message...
"Welcome to the Postgraduate Paramedicine Research Students (PaPeRS) group. This group is dedicated to postgraduate/higher degree research students in the field of paramedicine. There are so few of us but more and more are coming through which is great to see! The idea is that we have this informal group as a virtual meeting place where we can see what our fellow researchers are working on, be able to support each other and also to share some of our experiences."
If this sounds like you (or any of your colleagues right round the world), please go to the site and I'll send a quick message back to confirm the applicant is a student (rather than industry or post-doc researcher etc). Our members are from Australia and NZ at the moment, but it'll be great to get a larger network going!
I am the researcher David is talking about. I am a critical care paramedic and PhD candidate with a topic area in hyper acute stroke. I am at the confirmation stage (part time) and will be looking at prehospital stroke tools and technology for the diagnosis and triage of the acute stroke patient. It would be great to get an international group together.
The University of Nottingham (UK) and East Midlands Ambulance Service NHS Trust are currently conducting a study into pre hospital hypertensive stroke patients, with the use of transdermal GTN patches to lower hypertension. Paramedics randomly apply a GTN or placebo patch, which is followed up with 3 more patches across 3 days once admitted to hospital.
Let me know if you want any more information on this,
Just to throw my hat in the ring. I am a paramedic in the North of the UK who has recently embarked upon a PhD supported by a Stroke Association fellowship and I will be looking into stroke mimics. It's good to see there are others with similar interests.
