There was a vaccine developed against angiotensin 2 to fight hypertension several years ago, but I am interested in knowing if any other vaccines have been developed
I believe you're asking about vaccines against non-communicable diseases like cancer, heart disease, diabetes, etc. I don't believe there is anything that is currently approved by the FDA.
However, given the vast importance of non-communicable diseases, there are a number of human trials testing various "vaccination" platforms for common diseases. I know there are a number of trials on certain forms of cancer, but who knows when these would be approved.
PROVENGE® (sipuleucel-T) by Dendreon is FDA Approved.
PROVENGE is the first and only FDA approved immunotherapy for advanced prostate cancer.
PROVENGE is an immunotherapy that takes the patient’s own immune cells and reprograms them to attack his advanced prostate cancer. This process delivers a treatment designed just for each patient.
Affiris AG (Austria) has a vaccine against Alzheimer disease in an phase II trial. Current attempts to treat cancer using anti-PD1 might also regarded to be a vaccination since it increased the number of CD8+ T cells that respond against tumor antigens or revert their exhausted phenotype.
Thanks everyone. I am specifically thinking of potential "vaccination" strategies against heart disease. Thank you for your input. I'm aware of several of the vaccines against cancer, but I had not heard of some of the other vaccination strategies targeting contraception and allergies.
I believe Pfizer has/are about to initiate clinical testing of a peptide based anti-PCSK9 vaccine to reduce cholestorol and in turn cardiac disease. A preclinical virus-like particle based vaccine that targets PCSK9 has also been developed.
