@Denny many thanks for the links. It certainly looks like icy would do a world of good to our research work. I saw that it also has some promising plugins. Though still open to more suggestions especially those that have been tried on melanocytic images

Are you considering fully automatic methods only, or would you be satisfied with some level of user interaction?

@ Charles We are considering complete automation. It appears ITK-Snap is semi automated.
By resource friendly I assume you mean able to run on a mobile device - eg. capturing and analysing images on a mobile phone? This will obviously impact image quality and variability - making analysis more challenging
@Mark Actually, there exist devices that can be attached to mobile phones and tablets to make for better quality image resolutions
Are you just interested in segmentation or are you aiming for classification too? Something like MelApp from Health Discovery?
