I am new to stereotaxic surgery and looking for any tips or ideas to help me get the mouse head stable and level using jaw holder cuffs. Are there any ways to identify proper placement quickly?
I'd agree with Duy that it does require practise. I tend to attach the mouse to jaw clamp then very loosly attach the ear bars so some movement can still occur. Try and then level the head in terms of front and side tilt by eye first. When an incision has been made and the skull and bregma are clean and visible I would then take 4 quick measurments on the skull (front, back, left side and right side) If your front and back measurment and then your left and right side measurments are extremely close then you can be confident you have a level head. This whole process takes about 5 minutes so is well worth your time before diving straight into injections
