Almost all journals provide a specific number of words to include in the research, are the journals strict regarding that number? is this number include the abstract and references? what is your experience?
You should stay pretty close to the required word count for your first submission. If reviewers ask you to add content, the journal should accept that, unless it is very much longer.
It depends on the journal. Some allow even 10-20% to exceed. Others also oblige not to exceed the maximum number of figures or tables. You can still ask the editor by writing a comment
I agree there should have a maximum length for a research paper. Most journals adopt the policy of limiting the words instead of pages to do the justification for figures. Too long a research paper will quality to be a thesis!
When I was writing for publication after finishing my PhD, I tried to stick to all the guidelines for authors, but after that, I started to be commissioned to write review type articles.
On one occasion, I was unable to cover everything I felt I ought to, so after discussion with the editor, she published:
'Addressing the problems of long-term urethral catheterization: Part 1'
and
'Addressing the problems of long-term urethral catheterization: Part 2'
The information included did fall quite well into two sections.
Algunas revistas, te exigen cumplir con un máximo de 5000 palabras. Pero viene correspondiéndose con un máximo de cuartillas de diez. Es fácil ajustarse a esa norma.
