Managing Big Data in Cloud Computing Environment poses a great challenge. During the days of Distributed Computing, we were busy with transaction management across the participating building blocks, maintaining referential integrity across the distributed environment, etc.
Big Data is clearly not being stored in the same way we are used to (e.g., tables and columns in SQL). If you take Google's GFS (Google File System) as an example, they pretty much prescribed how the Big Data should be stored: Using TABLETs and TABLET SERVERs.
Also, Open Source file systems, like Hadoop File System, provide the tools to allow anyone to access Big Data very efficiently and operate on it.
When the data is distributed over such a wide area (planet-wide, to be exact !) another issue becomes important : REDUNDANCY. This is necessary to speed-up accesses from different parts of the world, and to ensure reliable operation when servers fail.
Also, concepts like MapReduce allow efficient operation on such large volume of data.
So, to answer your question: Correct. No more complex of a task by using these tools.
