What you think about some review of psychiatric journals to see how much middle- and low-income countries and developing countries are represented?
For instance, what is the correlation with impact factor? Are they presented alone or in collaboration with developed investigational centers? How many of these investigations are independent or funded by non-profit non-industrial sources?
I know that the main confounding factor and objection to this is that developing countries are lacking funds and resources. But they represent a considerable amount of the population.
In principle, taking into account the world's population and distribution of income, about 80-85% of papers should be written by authors from such countries, and about a half of papers should be written by Asian authors... I doubt that you can find many fields with such a distribution of authors (in science, North America and Europe are more active than they should by distribution of population), but, of course, you can try. Also, sometimes e.g. Asian authors write about Europe or America or vice versa (maybe they have co-authors from these regions or they are currently employed there)... thus, this will make such research more complicated.
I think it really depends on your criteria for what is fair representation.
Because most scholarly literature is published in English, anyone who does not speak English as a first language is at a disadvantage, which included much of the developing world. It is not fair, but it is a reality of our current academic publishing system.
