Often institutional affiliation of the author(s) is being regarded as contributing factor to the acceptance or rejection of a paper by the editorial board of highly cited journals. Do you agree with this assumption? Please provide personal experience if available.
As far as I can say, the institutional affiliation does not seem to be of relevance in that context. The main focus is on the content of the paper.

peer-reviewed journals would typically anonymise the essay and send it to a number of reasearchers in the field for review. Those reviewers do not get to know your name or institution and you do not get to know their names and institutions.

I think institutional affiliation can potentially have an influence at the point when editors choose reviewers. In particular, authors from "major" institutions probably get more time and effort put into the selection of their reviewers. After that, the process is anonymous.

Sometimes institutional affiliation is influencing the editors' decision, but mostly, the value of the work submitted is an important influencing factor on editors' decisions.
