Organic materials of plant or animal origin on incorporation in soil, decompose in soil due to microbial action and at least 8-10% remain un-decomposed and transform into humus.Overtime soils may have 30-60 % humic matter. The humus or its constituent humic  and fulvic acids exhibit unique physical and chemical properties and play important role in nutrient  and water retention and release, soil structure building, growth and survival microbes,pH and nutrient buffering and pollutant decontamination or reduction in toxicity, carbon sequestration, soil health and climate change mitigation.Scientists elucidated its chemistry and  gave shape to its supra structure or sub-components. With all the knowledge gained now it is being questioned whether the humus concept is valid or not.So in the present context, are the humic substances homogeneous entities or composite units having certain common unique characteristics/ properties.?
