I think yes. The reason is that these types of projects not only enhance the communication skill but also inculcate a spirit of team work among the students. The fully staged drama will also improve their critical thinking and polish their language skills, especially speaking skill. We should encourage our students to do such projects if they have time and opportunities.
I can't speak to the specifics of ESL/EFL, but I can to the opposite direction. My French language skills improved significantly by participating in such projects as both an actor and a director.
