Power line modems are now available as commertial communication transceivers to use the power line network to conduct communication signals. Power line network is used normally to transmit the electric power from sources to electricity consumers. These lines are electricity conducting and can conduct in addition to the electric power the communication electrical signal where they are made to have frequency band higher than the 50 Hz of the electric power supply and therefore one can separate the communication signal the electric power.

Filters are normally used to overcome the noise from the mains. The communication signals are normally  injected and extracted by inductive coupling methods followed by the appropriate filters.

Every transmitter or receiver is built normally from analog functions and digital functions. The analog functions are built from from analog circuits while the digital function can be implemented either by hard ware or software using programmable devices. In addition one uses for configuring and controlling these devices micro controllers which operate by software codes.In general any transmitter or receiver is composed of hardware + software. This software is the code required for them to work properly.

As for mitigating the burst noise produced by the appliances one uses the the so called multicarrier modulation where one subdivides the whole transmission band into subbands and assign a carrier frequency for every sub band. Then the modulation order is adjust according to the carrier to noise power in the subchannel.

That is the noisy subchannel is made to transmit a lower bit rate than the less noisy channel.

Also equalizers are use to equalize the gain of the different subchannels.

PLC is usually implemented using readily available transceivers to implement the digital-to-powerline interface. The 'trick' part is line isolation (achieved using some transformer or capacitive coupling) plus the fact that the grid is very low-impedance - resulting in very low signal levels.

Interference from appliances can be handles by filtering, choice of transmission band and the use of error checking or ECC codes.

Problems usually arise if 2 devices are on different phases of the grid.
