I think the world should be more interested in improving the inheritance of local breeds and preserving their biodiversity. I focus on local poultry breed as my filed. Local poultry breeds are characterized with their disease resistance, adaptation and protection against local environment. I think should be their large international projects interested in improving and preserving local poultry breeds.
It is true that local breeds in general and poultry breeds in particular are essential component of any food security programs especially in third world countries. This is because of their heat tolerance abilities and disease resistance. They are also considered as an integral part of any biodiversity strategy for any country. Yet, they are blamed for their low productivity and countries need to set conservation policies as well as breeding policies targeting their improvement to increase their productivity.

Famine, poverty and wars are highly related, so it is a complex issue and no poultry breeds will save people from famine. Agree with Dr Mustafa "local breeds in general and poultry breeds in particular are essential component of any food security programs especially in third world countries", also with Sustainability 2011, 3, 238-253; that Dr Haifa Juma posted.

I am sorry I mean biodiversity of all local breeds, plants, animals, poultry, .... , but I focus on poultry as my filed. World must interested in biodiversity of local breeds not focus only some commercial breeds. This very danger and serious. Large potatoes famine is not far.

Creo que si se debería mejorar los caracteres productivos de las razas locales, ya que aquellos se encuentras adptados al medio ambiente en que se encuentran; en otras palabras son más rusticos que las razas que importamos hacia diferentes regiones; si hablamos de avicultura obviamente comercial, sabemos que las aves son las especies de producción que mantienen el ciclo productivo más corto y más rentable, pues tiene una excelente conversión alimenticia, sería excelente prestar más atención al tema.
Biodiversity of indigenous poultry breeds is important, as the previous responder has already stated. Maintaining any animal base regardless of species, is dependent on feed resource and a stable feed resources is based in soil health. Healthy animal agricultural systems include a sustainable feed resource. Crop rotations that support increased soil organic matter are sustainable and reduce land degradation. Matching a sustainable feed resource to indigenous poultry production will lead to a sustainable integrated crop and poultry system. All too often, the merits of integrated systems are overlooked thereby missing large opportunities for enterprise support. While your personal focus is on poultry production, expanding your horizons by reaching into integrated systems will contribute to greater sustainability overall.
With the indisputable adverse effects of climate change which will impact negatively on livestock and plant production, Africa needs to rethink on the development and promotion of local/native/indigenous animal genetic resources. Development and promotion of local animal genetic resources can be a sustainable way to improve the livelihoods of the rural population in Africa. Despite the noticeable host of monetary and non-monetary benefits afforded by these, it is regrettable to note that limited research has been conducted to characterize, understand and develop local animal genetic production systems in Africa.
biodiversity of local breeds (plant, animal,poultry....) will keep the world sustainable development in agriculture.For exzampel, in china ,there are many local poultry breeds in rural area,including duck,chicken.at daynight,local duck go outside to eat wild water weeds and snail in pond,river or lake,which save many grain.These ducks have strong disease resistance and good adaptation to local climate , which guarantee lower death rate,at night,they go home to eat food byproductt ( rice bran,wheat bran,older vegetable leaf).So local people can produce lower cost animal food as supplement .In mountain area local chicken and goose can climb mountain to look for insect, grass and nut as feed.They don't need special management.So biodiversity of local breeds (plant, animal,poultry....) will help to save the world from famine partly.

I highly appreciate if one can manage to keep bio-diversity high and here of course local breeds play a crucial role. Famine, however, are very complex situation, and I would question that the biodiversity plays a major role, but in combination with other factors I think it can. Local breeds that are best adjusted to local conditions, that are better adapted and more resilient than HYV or genetic engineered crops / animal. Famine, however, is often also related to issues of poverty and deprivation, where food production does not play a major role,....
