Translation is a branch of Applied Linguistics. Applied linguistics provides solutions to the language related real life problems. Translation is a solution provided by applied linguistics to overcome the problem of language barriers like mutual incomprehensibility between or among the persons who speak different languages.

Also, as vemireddy stated translation in encompassed by the discipline of applied linguistics along with fields of study like testing , assessment, curriculum design, sociolinguistics, pyscholinguistics, CALL, etc.
