Together with Professor Herbert Zeman, I designed the first study using the VeinViewer in medical treatment in March 2005 at Luminetx, Memphis, TN. The first study was done at Clinica Miyake in April2005. The VeinViewer films the skin in infra-red, the image is continuously processed and projected back to the skin, in the same axel due to a hot mirror, with a fraction of a second delay. This spatial augmented reality device was used to find and treat small varicosities and feeder veins.
Augmented reality is the combination of a real image with computer generated image. The types are:
- Video See-Through: most common, like videogames that "put" us in the screen. Other example is the car rear camera with lines projecting the direction the car will go when you steer
- Glass see-through: google glass, car head display
- indirect: Using laptop computer camera and QR codes
- Spatial: image is projected on the interested area and there is no need of glass or video between your eyes and the object
