In Smart microgrid/grid system, switching is quite important especially if the system involves many Distributed resources and switchable loads. It may be possible to be managed by discrete event systems. The effectiveness of this method (communication infrastructure, other constraints) is important to easily integration to the system.
For sure the DES can replicate adequately the structure of a grid with switchable loads..
Seno Darmawan Panjaitan : Are you thinking about specifically DES or a hybrid approach where you combine DES with continuous time simulation (system)? Microgrids (like marco-grids) have voltage/frequency variables as control variables which are inherently continuous.
Srivats Shukla, I am thingking of DES works in higher level (manage the connection/disconnection, switching scheduling, etc) among microgrids, with the main grid or even among DG/DER based on particular requirements/conditions from the system or sub-system. While control systems (which may continuous) work to maintain the performance of power quality (voltage, frequency, power-sharing accuracy, etc.).
It may be useful to review the literature related to the way capacitor banks are used for voltage stability. A simple control scheme is to switch capacitor banks in or out depending on the time of day. A better control scheme is to perform switching based on network measurements such as voltage or power flow. Any switching needs to take into account the mechanical constraints (maybe none for power electronics).
Care has to be taken that local control schemes are coordinated in some way or operate slowly enough to avoid the risk of the overall system "hunting".
