I am working on land degradation detection. My research site is an arid, mountainous region. Grazing is the dominant human factor intervening with natural vegetation. The sites selected are less than 4 km^2.Would be grateful if someone could advise me as to what kind of on-desk priliminary planning should be done, what kind of general issues I should expect at site etc.
I am looking forward to go on this site visit for ground truthing.I am familiarized with GPS equipment but this is my first time so I may not foresee many problems arising at site.

You first have to know exactly what you are going to measure! Only then can you start planning your field validation campaign (Ground truth does not exist). Field validation campaigns do exist.

If you wish to do the supervised classification, you need to have field campaigns to record related data based on your objectives. Also after proceeding your images you have to verification by visiting field.
I guess field validation is quite a straight forward task. Are you carring your unclassified image with you, your GPS, spectroradiometer (incase you have one), a camera. Onece you have identified your site and verified then undertake supervised classifiation as you may need teh field data sets to do so.
