The very same concept has been described in a book titled Teaching and Researching Translation written by Hatim and Mason (2001). As you have rightly observed, the misinterpretation of the term has generally  been described based on linguistic evidence. Notably, overlooking the contextual clues materializing the meaning of the word in specific contexts has been identified as the main culprit. However, sociopolitical factors may also be involved. This 'mistranslation' phenomenon is also evident in how the word 'halal' is used - it is a common misconception that it refers only to the religious ritual associated with the slaughter of animals when in fact it translates as 'permissable' (the opposite of haram meaning forbidden) and consequently has a much wider usage. In my own view these mistranslations fit into a Western view of Islam which fosters negative perceptions of the religion.
