I am currently working on a European project called recharge green, whose objective is try to assess the impact of renewable energies on the ecosystem. For this purpose we estimated several economic benefits of ES and put them into maps, to be integrated in a spatially-explicit decision support system that allows a better power plant siting. We have some papers in review and a technical report will be available online by the end of this week. Ecosystem services can be made as a livelihood generation programme. The services of the coastal vegetation of the Indian Sundarbans like Porteresia, Ipomeoa are all tagged up in the preparation of organic fertilizers and the local people are involved in its preparation starting from plantation, nursery preparation and packaging the end products.

some years ago (2001) we carried out a research: "Atlas Project" joined with our Emilia Romagna Regional Admistration The research was based on the sustainable evaluation of the territory. It is clear that we tooke in to account also the value of the ecosystem services, joined to all values of the land. In this manner we produced maps to use after in to the management of the territory. Unfortunately this publication is in Italian, but it is clear that it is possible to apply to the management the content of your request.

Yes I have used ecosystem service mapping for decision making (using a tool called Polyscape see Jackson, B., Pagella, T., Sinclair, F., Orellana, B., Henshaw, A., McIntyre, N., Reynolds, B., Wheater, H., Eycott, A. (2013) Polyscape: a GIS mapping toolbox providing efficient and spatially explicit landscape-scale valuation of multiple ecosystem services. Urban and Landscape Planning 112: 74-88.). Currently most ES maps are not at a fine enough scale for 'on the ground' decision making. Much of the focus has been on national scale mapping. There are a number of tools that exist that will help with policy level decision making (InVEST, ARIES). In most cases these tools require good datasets to work well (which often don't exist). Different ES require different types of data so there is often a bias towards services that can be more easily mapped - and if is difficult to represent uncertainty (so sometimes maps can be more powerful tools then they should be!) Surprisingly few of these tools are validated by stakeholders at local scales and often they don't incorporate local knowledge and so tend to lack local legitimacy - I think mapping approaches are fundamental for decision making but we are a long way off.

Check on literature on scenario planning, which has been used extensively for identifying sensitive ecosystems, and planning for their protection in coastal development. It is a favorite topic in Integrated Coastal Zone Management. We protect the system ecosystems because of their ecosystem functions. I hope this reply helps you.

The literature provided by others are exellent. Indeed, you can find them experiences from local to global scales. At local scale in Europe there are two projects that try to operationalize the ecosystem services approach through different techniques (including mapping) at local scale: OpenNESS (http://www.openness-project.eu/) and OperaS (http://operas-project.eu/). OperaS has also a multi-scale approach.
At European scale, the initiative called MAES has high influence in the European Commission (http://biodiversity.europa.eu/maes). Indeed, it has been driven by EU.
Lastly, at European scale, the Horizon Project called ESMERALDA (http://www.ecosystem-management.uni-kiel.de/research/projects/esmeralda/esmeralda?set_language=en) is also highly connected with policy.
