In my opinion, CFD is a tool to analyse the simulated fluid flow using the different available commercial software. Before going towards the simulation you need to do modeling of the system. Most of the available software these days have the facilities to model the system too. I am a novice to modelling. So if you or any other researcher can suggest certain books or journals or any other source where I can practice or learn some CFD problems which have already been solved using modelling I will be highly thankful.
CFD in nutshell is nothing but solving governing partial differential equations numerically in some physical domain using appropriate boundary conditions. Two ways of learning CFD are either use your own written programs (essential especially in the beginning while learning CFD, becomes increasingly tough as you begin to write programs for practical problems) or using some commercial software like ANSYS FLUENT, CFX etc.
I have few research papers on my publication list, some of them are my CFD course projects during my PhD. These also have C-programs with them. They mainly use FEM, but some also use FDM. Two of these are following:
1. Linear Wave Equation and 1D Shock Tube Problem solved using many different schemes
2. Self-adjoint form of linear convection diffusion equation solved using finite element method
If your computer center has ANSYS FLUENT you can start learning CFD using FLUENT. I would suggest three very effective sources of learning CFD through ANSYS FLUENT:
1. Cornell University has very good FLUENT Tutorials by Dr Rajesh Bhaskaran’s group. Please go to https://confluence.cornell.edu/display/SIMULATION/FLUENT+Learning+Modules. These tutorial also give you theoretical knowledge related to the problems as well.
2. You can also go to ANSYS website at http://www.ansys.com/ and down load tutorials which are very useful.
