As part of a study I am working on we need a way to count human use in the area we are trapping wildlife. Many of our locations are adjacent to recreational trails so we thought it might be best to estimate use by placing trail count cameras nearby. Has anyone used these and if so, are there any companies that produce them that you like? How difficult is the setup?
There are 2 technologies you can use trail counters and cameras. We have used trail counters from Trafx https://www.trafx.net/products.htm for vehicles but will work for animals or humans. After much trial and error we selected Reconyex https://www.reconyx.com/ cameras for recording movement of animals and people along trails. You need to order the stealth camera since the red glow from the flash version is noticed readily by people leading to camera theft.
also be very careful cameras close to trails with high human traffic have a tendency to "disappear". We were looking at some animal presence/movement in an urban park associated with high human use and most of the cameras were stolen, locks cut and left etc. try to find someway to protect them - also this course is really good to take https://www.scr-cameratrap.com/
