I am looking for a smartphone app that allows mapping single locations of plants/animals/things. The app should provide a picklist or any selection system in order to select a given name for the (plant) species to be mapped, should take a photo, store location and foto locally in a database and later upload to my larger database in my office.
Is this a dream or is anyone out there aware of a software like this? I know there is a ESRI mobileGIS-app, but I don´t want to rely on the high costs of the ESRI products. BUt that mobileGIS app would be something in that direction.

Jens, thanks for bringing up the topic, I think many ecologists have spent considerable amount of time trying to find best tools for their field observations. ObsMapp looks great, thanks Paulo for the link!
I have used OruxMaps for fieldworks - it is perfect for tracking your movement, uploading your own layers and using wms service (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.orux.oruxmaps&hl=EN). It is very suitable for orientating in the nature, storing locations of sampling sites etc. However, it is not so good for observations of species, as it is mostly designed for hiking and other outdoor facilities rather than nature observations. It takes pictures and attaches them to location, but does not provide anything related to species.
In Estonia, we have a special tool called Loodusvaatluste Nutirakendus ("Smartphone App for Nature Observations", quite originally :) ). This is linked to official nature observation database and lists all the species in Estonia. Unfortunately it is only in Estonian (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=ee.elus.lva&hl=EN)
I have also briefly used Nature spotter (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=appinventor.ai_freestonerj.NatureSpotter9), this was OK, but I cannot remember whether it had drop-down list of species.

Hi Jens,
South African VegMap is available as an app (SAMBI, Pretoria). You can also use it to dropping a pin and record whatever you want to record (plants, community).
South African National Parks (some rangers, rather) also use a modified GPS to record position of animals while they perform animal counts).

If you are looking for an App Free and Open Source for outdoor surveying the best in my opinion is GEOPAPARAZZI (http://geopaparazzi.github.io/geopaparazzi/)
It works on Android only but It allows you to create forms to full fill with your selected info, record GPS tracks, routing, etc.
Data can be exported in multiple standard formats and spatial DB can be connected too.
Workshops material is also available for free.

HI Jens not sure if you are still interested in your plant tracking app. I certainly would. I just started to track a whole plantation by using QGIS.
