Post intensive care syndrome (PICS) is very common, primary care doctors have little or no help from us intencivist in taking care of these patients post critical illness recovery and discharge from ICU. Being an intencivist I think our main focus is to save lives and act acutely. But I think there is little or no focus on post critical illness and we should have special clinics for these patients.
The medical institution should do a better educate everyone both in the intensive care situation and outside of the interns I’ve care unit.
Post critical care follow up is crucial, and it is more challenging in my Pediatric population, as this needs more focus on the individual patient's needs, cognitive and developmental functions, as well as any long-term residual psycho-social issues that may arise.

@mohamad- its almost a similAr challenge we face in adults.
Its like - after a cabg surgery the surgeon still follows the patient in clinic and make sure the patient recovers completely and guides the patient, family and pcp. But we as icu docs never do that.

You are absolutely right. So many evidences can support your and our position in supporting this clinical path. Relapse rate is high among this segment of clients. This can be prevented by structuring special clinics for these patients!
By the way Dr.Sharma, I'm very interested in following the aforementioned segment of patients through research endeavors!

As you rightly say,PTSD/PICS following ITU admission is very common,and is often either underdiagnosed,or under-supported following discharge from ITU.
We should be able to follow up our patients,and perhaps also their families where appropriate,but often the constraints of time and funding make this difficult to impossible.
A fully funded multidisciplinary clinic session with input from psychologists,physiotherapists,nursing and medical staff would be ideal,but in the UK health system this is rare.

Una enfermedad crítica supone un cambio en el eje hipotálamo-hipofisis-tiroides y no se deben realizar test de función tiroidea porque están alterados los resultados, tanto por la enfermedad, como por la medicación de UCI. Tras resolver la enfermedad crítica y metabolizarse los medicamentos administrados, se retoman las valoraciones y se actúa en consecuencia.
