Hi Ben. I think there are four aspects "missing" from MR approaches. 1) Is to bring home to students how to identify ALL stakeholders... and how they affect the problem / issue and how it affects them. 2) To somehow encourage them to think more deeply about the possible causes...and not assume the obvious ones. i.e. to uncover the real problem ... and therefore the correct research problem. 3) To apply their minds to identifying the effect or implications of results of research on company actions, and finally 4) to include more hands-on training on the use of technology in market research. How to conduct online surveys... computer aided interviewing... analysis of web metrics etc.

Thanks Helen this is really helpful. I like the focus on ALL stakeholders - this is more multidimensional than typical texts. Symptoms versus causes is often covered but as you say encouraging the students to think this through can be more challenging. Insight and implications - great points. Tehcnology and emerging research issues - all very important and agree entirely.
Thanks so much again for taking the time - this is useful!
to reach younger generations, I think social media might help, i.e. teaching how outreach can be improved by incorporating social media. With regard to the content, I am not an expert though.
