I am teaching a large lecture class (800+) in the Auditorium Maximum of the university. On the one hand, it is great that a substantial number of the enrolled students actually come to the lecture (no attendance taken). The problem is that about 2/3 behave very cooperatively, while one third does not: They begin their own conversations, come late and leave early. I am wondering if there are any ideas out there how to handle this situation. In earlier years, I have tried to recommend to those who come for the social aspect to go and meet their friends in the cafeteria and not in the lecture hall. But this did not work. Any strategies? - What worries me most is that the students are pre-service teachers and behave like teenagers. Any help for me to re-frame?
