I have some experience with Endnote and to be honest, that’s what I’m using right now because it’s what is used at my institution and I know many other people that use it and can help with any problems.

I use Jabref, but is for BiBTeX and LaTeX. You can donwload it free in: http://jabref.sourceforge.net/

I use and recommend Qiqqa.

Qiqqa lets you import the chosen name of your subdirectory as a tag, so you do not have to tag by hand. Simply just drag the file to a Qiqqa library and drop it there. There is no need to store all PDFs in one directory. However you must not pollute subdirectories that you have told Qiqqa to watch with spurious, unrelated files!

Qiqqa is very powerful software, but works in the background nicely.

If OCR worryingly makes your laptop warm, you can configure less OCR processes.

You do not have to use Qiqqa features such as recommended reading, but certainly it can find out relationships and themes that you will not spot manually, especially when your document library becomes big.

Qiqqa has folders to be watched. Qiqqa OCRs every detail of every such paper, and allows you to sniff for the document's bibliographic info via the Web. You can highlight and scribble notes on your PDFs, and Qiqqa automatically reopens long files at the last page you were reading if you configure it so.

Unless you are using it for business purposes, the free version gives enough free on-line storage to back up and sync your PDFs on all your computers. Qiqqa maintains a BibTex library and interfaces with MSWord. It allows you to do full text search all libraries, one library, groups of files or one file, and via tags, authors, and THEMES, with results shown in context.

I think the main reason for using a document library manager is to help you to find patterns, connections and THEMES, and keep your literature well organized. And this is what Qiqqa does so very well.

I started by using JabRef with Latex. For word, I used EndNote and Mendeley which is free but needs registration.

Now I prefer Citavi. Citavi is a complete reference manager with many options and can work with word. Citavi is free for 100 references.

I personally wish to thank Mr. Amin Ordikhani Seyedlar for his educative response. Mendeley is free for use. To me, i prefer to use EndNote which i am used to.

Hello Colleagues,

I am Mendeley user since 2011. However, recently I have added another software - Zotero. I did this move because of following reasons:

a) I am a Linux/LibrOffice user for many years (occasionally started using Unix/Linux OSes at the end of 199x). As far as I know, an up-to-date version of Mendely does not support Linux distributions i.e. LibreOffice software (plug-in does not work correctly).

b) Periodically, I use GoogleDocs for proposal/report writing. Zotero supports GoogleDoc (you may add citations to your GoogleDoc document via GoogleDoc extension of Zotero) and Linux systems correctly (good integration with LibreOffice)

At the same time, Zotero works fine with MS Word (2013, 2016 and 2019). Here, I use a Windows 7 virtual machine (under VirtualBox) + MS Office + Zotero.

There are several, say, a quastion to take into account:

You have limited space (for free) for full texts in Zotero. Otherwise, you have to buy extra space.

For me Mendeley is the best.

Zotero. To my knowledge, Zotero is the only tool that is capable of parsing a reference simply by dragging and dropping a PDF document inside the main window. Can also create a reference from a webpage content. Seamless integration with PubMed and PubMed Central to download references in batch, and will even automatically download PDFs of articles if they are freely available on PubMed Central. Can generate a reference from a PMID, a DOI, and even an ISBN/ISSN code.

I am using Mendeley. Mendeley is best for me too.

Try Qiqqa. It also clusters the themes in your library. It is now available as opensource and is completely free.

In my experience, Zotero works very well if you are using a Mac. I recommend it.

Hello, I am use Mendeley

I do not recommend Mendeley, the problem of this software because through internet you can get a lot virus (malware, troyanos, etc) and so slowly these informatics virus is going to eliminate your information in your pc, or laptop... That was happened to me... The good of all this is that I had my information back up.

For me, Endnote is a good one to use.

Of course, Endnote is good and user friendly but Mendele is free

Citavi has a free version up to 100 references. Qiqqa is excellent, but may not be supported in the future.

I've been using Citavi for 4 years now and find it excellent. Free version allows for 100 references, and projects can be stored locally on your computer or in a cloud. I've recently had a panic moment when I couldn't access my project stored in the cloud, but after updating to Citavi 6 I could access it again. To avoid this problem in the future I'd recommend storing everything on your computer, but in all other respects I find Citavi much superior to Mendeley or Endnote.
