I have monitored Himalayan Lepidoptera for decades. I would suggest that the insect part of the biodiversity monitoring relies more on presence or absence rather than numbers of individuals. The latter is a carry over from vertebrate monitoring where numbers no doubt are useful, but has no relevance in the context of insects.

Congratulations on your initiative to organize this type of event. The insect monitoring is very relevant in our current context.

Work a few years ago with the monitoring of mosquitoes in areas that have suffered environmental impact, especially in hydropower. This group appears to be very important because their role as vectors of various diseases. I suggest that this group is covered in your event.

I agree with the all above opinions and would like to suggest:

I think for insect monitoring study you can manage your work with insect habitat zone rather order/family wise studies

For instance on plants ( in the terrestrial environment) you further divide habitat as insects found on the branches, over the leaf, under the leaf, inside the branches (shoot borer) inside the leaf(miners) inside the trunks/over the trunk, associated with the roots, inside the roots etc

May be at a glance it would feel you uncomfortable, however, this would make your work more systematic and easier to assign in different ecological areas

Be vigilant for the polymorphism in insect that makes so many times confusing as for the same species

You would find described as two separate species because of misunderstanding.

Last but not least: do not allow to kill insects unnecessarily. Biodiversity study never means to establish a museum of known and beneficial insects/animals

Sounds great and in case of relevance, we have been conducting insect pollinator monitoring across the UK over the last 4 years.  We used GIS to stratify transects and processed species interaction data in the {bipartite} package of R, now DNA-barcoding insect specimens and quantifying pollen and nectar resources of stands of vegetation.  The research is part of the UK Insect Pollinator Initiative:  http://www.bristol.ac.uk/biology/research/ecological/community/pollinators/initiative/.  All the best with your work in China.

We must first see what you to study , depending on the group will be the method used, generelmente the method most used is the capture-recapture for flying insects such as dragonflies , and quadrants are used in areas of ponds and small streams, and use marking with paint in the abdomen

But much depends on the object of study

Interesting project! Collects and identifications could be realized at rather low costs if you have a good network of collaborators. But in all cases the most consuming time and higher costs will be the identification and building the reference collection.

We decided to create a global network of butterfly monitoring organizations called Butterfly International Network (BIN). This meeting was funded by GEO BON and organised by Eugenie Regan (UNEP-WCMC) and Chris van Swaay (Dutch Butterfly Conservation).
