Good morning everybody.
Might some of you point to some relevant literature treating and trying to explain the R-curve effect observed during mode I delamination tests of composite materials (DCB testing)?
An explanation mentioned quite often is fiber bridging. However, R-curve effect is observed even in total absence of such phenomenon. Is there any other reasonable explanation?

The R-curve behaviour in fracture mechanics of composites is - among others - dependent on the layup. Generally, toughening mechanisms include: fibre bridging, crack deflection/blunting/pinning/branching, debonding, pull-out etc.
Relevant literature includes e.g.: 1) Fracture Mechanics of Polymers (J.G. Williams), 2) Fractography (E. Greenhalgh), 3) Composite Materials: Engineering and Science (F.L. Matthews & R.D. Rawlings).
