There is an option available on the research gate which allows us to upload private copies of our publication. is it or is it not the violation of th copy right terms of non open access publications?
Different publishing houses have different 'rules' for copyright. However, it is not always clear - and it is certainly not often enforced. I personally think that it is 'safe' to upload non-open access journal articles after a certain period i.e. 6 months following hard-copy publication. Less than that may impact direct sales.
It is strange that the author/creator of the article is scared of his sharing his/her work, because publisher has to take the profit for decades of decades. International law may be made to correct this one-sided show and make all publications available to all, 3-5 years after publication, so as to celebrate this age of 'right to knowledge".
Rakesh - the publishers do have to adapt - I fully agree. However, the large publishing houses i.e. Elsevier, Wiley etc have only know this climate. A large part of their current 'business' remains institutional/individual (for those who can afford to pay) subscription - so they still have to protect it. It is expensive, but they have to spend a proportion of that money reinvesting. It's not just 'profit'. If these companies do not adapt - then they know that they will lose out.
