you use the methanolysys to "derivaze" the carboydrate, no? Trimethylsilyl is the group? trimethylsilyl chloride is you reagent?
Silver carbonate is needed to remove the cloride ions from the solution.... I have in mind that it is necessary, because silver formed ansd insoluble chloride...
You may try silver oxide, oy thallium carbonate (is very toxic!) but silver carbonate is easy to prepair!
