can anyone can suggest a polymer thickening agent, possibly aerosol ?. We are using nanocomposite polymer solution for dip coating. Polymer is too runny.
It depends on the media. is it water or organic solvent?
in aqueous media you can use CMC or HPMC and other cellulose based polymers. please, pay attention that the pH is important and you should increase the pH about 9.
If the media is solvent base you can use wax or polyamid.
You could try additive BYK 410, which has been used in industry coating for many years. The additive creates highly thixotropic flow behavior and consequently improves the anti-sagging and anti-settling properties.
There two kind of thickeners: inorganics ( like: clays, Fumed silicas, and some engineered clays likes phosphates) and organics ( like: small molecules and polymerics).
Based on your media and the rheology properties you can select the type of thickener, for example, in aqueous media, you may select hydrophilic silica or in organic media you may select the hydrophobic one, if you need inorganic thickener.
Or if you need organic thickener ( based on rheology properties you need) you can select from cellulosics, acrylate based, urea/urethane based and sorbitol if your media is aqueous, and select from poly amides, urea/urethane base, polyethylene wax, stearyl alcohol, stearic acid, cetyl alcohol, beeswax and like if your media is organic.
For example BYK 410 that Zhu suggests, is based on urea/urethane and useful for non-aqueous and medium polar media.
I suggest you use clay-based materials such as bentonite. Since, the presence of bentonite causes the composition to remain gel-like when undisturbed, to thin immediately upon agitation, and to again thicken immediately.
