I am starting my research modelling a DFIG for inertial response and also sub-synchronous resonance studies.
An average model of the DFIG will satisfy my needs (Converter switching level modelling is not needed)
I might also need to model a wind farm which would have multiple DFIGs.
Simulink is very straightforward. Is there any advantage PSCAD has over Simulink for these particular exercises?

That depends entirely on the depth that you wish to go to.
BTW, why should you expect SSR with DFIG ? Have you evidence of some practical occurrence of such events ?

PSCAD is a software that make use of intelligent techniques to computerize the power quality evaluations for improved accuracy and efficiency since manual analysis takes considerable time and would require special knowledge. Also PSCAD solves the differential equations of the power system and its controls in the time-domain. The results are computed as instantaneous values in time but can be converted to phasor magnitudes and angles by the true RMS meters and/or FFT spectrum analyzers.
MatLab also having more advantages but little complex....
