COVID-19 and Sarcopenia in the Elderly: Prevention, Contributors, prognostic impact, screening, and management recommendations
We had a patient who lost about 30 Kg in weight due to severe COVID-19, simply because such patients need ICU and ventilatory care and often given steroids, all having a catabolic effect on the muscles.
It has also been reported that bedrest, COVID-19 and ICU care related muscle damage can contribute to it (1). Even elderly living alone during the COVID-19 related lock-downs suffered sarcopenia (2). It has been recommended that hospitalized patients with COVID-19 should be screened for sarcopenia, as this is associated with a poor prognosis (3). Therefore, protein supplementation protocols as a target for treatment of sarcopenia have been advised (4).
