Signals collected by bse detector comes from materials penetrated by electron beam. The higher the kV the greater the penetration. So my question is, contrast in color seen in the image due to different atomic weight of element are contributed not only from the surface but also bulk material? If this is true, for image of material with multi grains, the contrast seen on the grain is not representation of the composition of the grain? (Since, signal is also from material below the grain?)
