Most people in top-positions (in India at least) seem to think that brilliant minds are only those who can remember maximum terms, numbers, facts - across multiple subjects. In fact, they would like to see maximum content in the syllabus; and they feel happy with a few students who do well in such intensive course(s). I am shocked at the disregard they have for the majority of students who are brilliant in other ways. I wish they had put some effort in making the students relate to the basic concept first and then focus on imparting self-learning abilities in students (of course, while teaching 'selected' advanced topics).
Now there is lot of changes seen in Indian education system. Currently we are adopting Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation System. Which is having a goal of stress free education by monitoring and evaluating student continuously.

I am not sure multiple evaluations or continuous monitoring will address the problem I mentioned. It is important to give enough time for the 'clarity of fundamental concepts' - both by teachers and students (I would like stress that the focus should be on 'most if not all' students rather than a few). They need to spend time in discussing and imagining concepts, rather than 'information accumulation'. There is a lot of content/coverage in our primary education system. The result: a) Originality in thinking in the majority of the students never takes off or is suppressed and the focus shifts to memorizing for exams; b) Most of the learned aspects is only forgotten by most of the students eventually; and, most importantly, c) the majority of the students are made to feel that they are NOT good.
