Dear Bette, yes that is correct. You first run a Manova: (Independent variable X with two levels, and continuous dependent variables Y1 and Y2). MANOVA will provide you overall (if I may use the word:bundeled or simultaneous) impact of the independent variable on the two dependent variables. Depending on your research question, you may want to follow the MANOVA with:
- Univariate ANOVAs (as follow-ups to MANOVA) which aim at checking which individual variables (as opposed to all variables together) differ between groups.
- Linear Discriminant Analysis, LDA, (as a follow-up to MANOVA) aimed at checking which linear combination of individual variables leads to maximal group separability and at interpreting this linear combination.
Hello Bette Jingyi Wu. Are you able to tell us what the dependent variables are? Also, do you have one multivariate question, or do you have two univariate questions? Putting that another way, do you care about group differences on both DVs separately, or do you care only if the groups differ on some linear combination of the two DVs? I think that more often than not, people (mistakenly) use MANOVA when they really have 2 (or more) univariate questions.

Choice of Manova or t-tests depend on your constructs and nature and type of variables Manova is more complex and can be studied to study effect of several independent variables on dependent variables. In your case perhaps t-tests would be more appropriate.Cant advise more unless details are availble
