Yesterday, a male scientist at CERN, the Italian Prof. Strumia, insisted that physics was "built by men," and not by invitations to women.
Today, it has been announced that for the first time since 1963, a woman will receive the Nobel Prize for Physics. This is Prof. Donna Strickland from the University of Waterloo, in Canada.
Is this just coincidence? Or should we suspect some manipulation of the media?

It came to my mind that the germans have the exact word that could explain the prizes phenomenom, it is zeitgeist.
Maybe Prof. Donna Strickland won a Nobel Prize because she is competent, don't you think? Is that so hard to believe?
No, no, no that's NOT my point! Of course she deserved it! And, no doubt many women who didn't get one before her did as well. My question is whether the CERN episode set up a more attentive audience for the Nobel prize?
Please don't imply that I'm expressing sexist views when I am not. I take great offence at that. You should desist.

It could well be, aside the fact that the prize is related to practical applications and not on revolucionary concepts galvanizing physics. Women are all over the Nobels this year, I am waiting for the transgener or whatever or the minority of minority representative prize.

If I misunderstood you, please accept my sincere apologies. But I don't believe there has been media manipulation. The news I read about Nobel Prize are not even making reference to CERN's episode.

No, I think you're quite right on the matter. Surely, Nobel had no role in promoting its award by trying to link it to the CERN event. And, I doubt CERN would try to dampen the fire by trying to hold back criticism until so close to the Nobel announcement. But I do get this uneasy feeling because these two events were announced in the media so close together. Maybe it was just coincidence? Maybe not....
The CERN announcement got lost after a few hours because of the Nobel announcement. The Nobel announcement had more resonance because of the nonsense at CERN. Negative quickly balanced by positive. Unusual in medias that usually explore negatives (wrongs) for long periods of time. But the CERN matter was buried quickly by the Nobel announcement. Happy coincidence? Or not?
