Hello, we have a ground steel target for MALDI. There is a small black chip sticked to the steel, which is for the instrument recognizing the ID of the target. This have been detached during cleaning. Have you encountered something similar? Can we stick it back with an appropriate adhesive?

Which instrument are you talking about?
Generally, I would say that you can. In some of our experiments, we use double layer adhesive to attach metal wires to our target.
The problem would be align the chip correctly for the target identification.
If your instrument is a Bruker one (which I suspect it is), I would say that you can, since these chips are just glued to the plate, although you might have to be careful about what Fabrizio is suggesting. However, you can also work without it, but in this case you would have to manually input the plate geometry on FlexControl.

when I had the teaching for the Bruker Autospeed TOF/TOF system, the guy told us that the chip in general is only necessary for the software if you want to do TOF/TOF - fragmentation of a mother Ion. This is only possible on one target, not on two different ones with two different chip codes. There will be absolutely no problem if you use the target without the chip - there is just one property (the target code) of the measurement condition missing, when you check it in the Flex Analysis software. This may be problematic if you want to repeat the experiment in e.g. 10 years or for colaboration partners/quality control.
Fabrizio is right - you need to align the chip exactly to not get in trouble during the measurement - if the chip falls down in the instrument and destroys some of the internal electronics, the trouble is maximized...
My suggestion would be to directly ask the Bruker technical support - I was never disappointed and got appropriate instructions from them right away!

Thank you very much for your answer. I asked the MALDI support for if I can glue back the chip and what adhesive to use. they told me that is "UHU endfest plus" and I can try to glue it back, but cant find that in Cyprus. I didn't know that you can use it without the chip, as Antonio also said. but if true then that's convenient. You are right I ll contact MALDI support again.
