How do you "practically" qualify a mechanical component (gear/crane boom) or a member in a steel bridge to be safe against fatigue? Just the SN curve?

In case of bridge members I understand that the connection detail is taken into account. What about other components? Do you use the standard SN curve but with the hot spot stress? In such case...
