Over the past few years I have received an ever increasing number of 'invitations' to fake international conferences - most often in subject areas that are wildly divergent from my area of expertise. They all get quickly deleted from my in-box. But I wonder... does anyone actually go to these conferences? If so, why?
Yes. This is a real danger. And often they ask for a Registration Fee as well with an attractive Early bird discount.
Fortunately, I'm not one to attend conferences outside my country.
I know of a person who says I have attended more than 180 conferences. Such kind of persons and those who have no idea about predatory conferences must be attending these meets.
Are they really fake? I have also received a number of them and even got a phone call to send an abstract. Thanks
If you are a renowned person in your field and receiving such invitations, they might be genuine otherwise fake.
If the organizers are willing to pay your travel and accommodation, then it is likely a legitimate conference. The best approach to share your research is to actively seek out the societies and organizations that fit your field of interest and submit your abstracts to their conferences listed on their websites.
Fortunately, I did not attend that kind of conference. However, we want to be aware about not only fake conferences, but also predatory journals.
Regarding fake conferences, I have see a lot of notices on university notice boards, too. I do not know whether the people those who display this kind of notices have an idea abut the reality. They publish whatever at high registration fee and frequently held their conferences even in Sri Lanka.
Predatory journals, I am a junior researcher and receive a lots of emails every week from this type of journals, and all of them ask to submit manuscripts for their journals. Sometime, they say that they need only one article for their coming issue and help them by submitting a manuscript. However, the truth is all of them are predatory journals. If we pay their very expensive publication fee they will publish what ever we submit.
Therefore, young and junior researches like me want to be aware of this kind of corruptions. Most of the new researches are suffering from publication thirsty, and go for this kind of alternatives to increase their publications list quickly. It create an opportunity for people to earn money through such corrupted businesses. Poor victims may do not know how mach of damage will happen to their reputation later.
The most pathetic situation is that the unethical academics are also behind this as organizers, key note speakers, panel chairs, editors, reviewers and etc.
