When someone who has been following you, decides not to, wouldn't it be nice if they were offered the opportunity to state the reason why they stopped following? (Of course, providing this feedback would be completely optional.)
It seems to me that quite a lot could be learned if people who stop following are given the opportunity to say why -- if they use this opportunity (I know I always would like to know the reason(s)).
AND: I suppose it might also be very useful if a similar opportunity, to provide feedback (optionally), was also presented to a person when she/he STARTS FOLLOWING you -- who knows, one might learn who has interests much in-common or very much congruent with your views or approaches.

Very interesting question.
Normally, I begin to follow people that captures my attention giving good answers to important questions. Proposing interesting themes to be discussed. Reading mine and answering. /and I start to follow - especially - people from my interest area - Economic Development. A I stop to follow people that are not from my area and that are not active in research works.
But, I am sure that you´re right. There are many other reasons to do - or stop to do - that.

Perhaps, I support Prof. Aurelio Hess. Follow researchers who are active on research gate and learn more from their works (Whether in your area or not). But stop following people who are inactive and may not follow you back.

Interesting question!
I am new enough here that I generally know why people follow me. It's because I follow them or they respond to one of my posts, questions, answers or other contributions. It would be interesting to know why people follow or stop following and ResearchGate could add that as a built-in feature in order to improve their study and measure of influence and to guide participants about how they are perceived, from etiquette to the worth of their contributions.

To tell you the truth, I never notice who has stopped following me.
However, I can still say that many variables are on the play when it comes to following or unfollowing someone, namely: time, interest in the topic, having some knowledge to answer the questions posed, and/or interest in growing their circle of connections.
I do agree that it is good to know the reasons in both cases, and better to take that as constructive feedback.
I am a doctoral student and beginning researcher. I like to follow those who give relevant answers that will help me to become a better researcher. Additionally, this forum allows you to communicate with others across the globe, which is really a privilege for me!
The main features of the expert teacher are, he or she will have a repertoire ways at one's disposal for handling the task of teaching, and then knowing how to choose and apply what is appropriate from one's repertoire.
This tasks can be class room management skills, motivation of students by involving them long ongoing discussion on how to encourage students become analytical and applying craft knowledge and understanding connections between concepts in the content and how student learn them.
