I am doing my PhD studies in CAES and need to do calculations for selection of equipment and simulations for the performance of the system including optimizing of the system for cost effectiveness. Quite new to MATLAB. Is there a particular way on how to go about this in respect to MATLAB? Use scripts for calculations and the use Simulink for the simulation? What about optimization algorithms in MATLAB?

Peter Vella ..About cost, you should try to use HOMER, it's an efficient tool to evaluate your work technically and financially as well. MATLAB is number one for what is technical.
If you're trying to compare costs you can use GAMS develop an optimization model that will minimize costs or achieve other objectives and conduct a comparative analysis in MATLAB.
Peter Vella If you already have a model that will serve as an objective function....briefly look at MATLAB optimization toolbox (often in the program documentation) for how to write the necessary function m-files and accompanying syntax to run the optimization...i can give further assistance if required.
