I am doing a research regarding the thermal decomposition. So I really need the temperature go to 900K(600C). I knew that it would contaminate the cell if we decompose sample in DSC cell. But I did see some researcher use crucible without lids or with pierced lids in DSC. So I got confused what the correct operation for DSC. Thanks!
Well, Yes. you can actually decompose your sample in DSC cell. The pro's and con's of this are:
1. You can use decomposition kinetics when you decompose in DSC ( But preferably done in TGA)
2. But make sure you clean your cell properly. Else, the contaminants would change the specific heat of the DSC cell.
Thus, I would suggest you to run a TGA profile before you do a DSC measurement. Check the decomposition temperature in TGA and and use the pierced lid experiment in DSC (Which is for volatile samples).

Better make a TG (TG/MS) analysis to see how the sample decomposes (temperature, kinetics, volatile components,..) and then DTA. With an appropriate DTA you get almost the same information as DSC
