Is anybody interested in working with me on a small project related to hygiene and sanitation aspects during menstruation in women? It would be initially a small survey based work then can expand. Also, one can suggest how to design this project more fruitfully.

Well to start with, we need to prepare a questionnaire for survey work to know the issues related to menstrual sanitation. Then we can introduce the awareness and remedial part. Also, we both can write a small self-help book related to menstrual problems and related aspects.

There is a product now available in the US that can be worn internally as one would wear a diaphragm. It holds the discharge until it is intentionally (or unintentionally) removed from the vaginal canal and emptied. This seems terribly unsanitary to me and I believe it would lead to incidences of toxic shock syndrome if not emptied very regularly. Also, i have read that it was the women of Egypt who first used wadded fiber *tampons* as an internal absorbent in the years BC.
Whats more, there are now womens groups in Africa that make pads from banana trees fibers for use by young women who, without them, could not attend school for several days out of the month for fear of ridicule. This added difficulty interrupts the already scant educational opportunities for women on that continent.

I just came across your question and the answers today! I would like to know about your pilot project, location, results etc.? This is something I'm very much passionate about and would like to conduct research on various aspects of menstruation in Zimbabwe, where I am based.
I am not aware of the use of banana tree fibres as substitutes for pads, however it is plausible. Nonetheless, there are some grass-roots organizations, movements and companies that are focusing on menstrual hygiene and its social implications e.g. missing school or work, as mentioned above.
