In order to combat open defecation in rural areas, aiming behavioral change has been found to be a powerful strategy. Campaigns to make people realize the ills of defecating in the open and convincing them to make toilets has been on the forefront of national agendas in various countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America. Popularly called CLTS (Community-Led Total Sanitation), it is a people-centric approach. However, in order to assess the effectiveness of such campaigns after a few years (of execution), certain indicators need to be identified.
