So, as I understand this, the Literature Review is based on the idea that what editors of journals want to see, even more than quality of a piece (to a degree), is originality. So, AFTER your research question, but BEFORE your claim, you provide a review of how other scholars have addressed this topic recently - with the last ten years [so, theoretically, the Lit Review will consist of a survey of ALL of the sources on your particular topic, novel, play, etc.,] in the last ten years. This will help to contextualize the current debate regarding the text on which your are writing (since academic writing is characterized as a conversation or dialogue), and prove that you are taking an approach or addressing the problem in the text in a way that no one has done in recent scholarship. You are making an argument for your own originality.
