Bitcoin does not satisfy the ideal properties of money, such as a stable store of value. The collapse of MtGox exchange this week is a dagger through the heart of the viability of Bitcoin. It's only real use, apart from a speculative trading instrument, was its anonymity. However a merchant taking Bitcoin probably wants to convert it back to dollars or yen or euro asap. However, this conversion proved very difficult last week when the largest exchange went dark. I argued a year ago that Bitcoin were really Bit tulips and it appears that the bloom is coming off this flower!

Bitcoin may get momentum for now. But talking about long term sustainability, Bitcions may not be promising. It doesn't have the characteristics of being used as money. Further, the regulations in respective countries may not allow the applicability. Hence, it may lead to be used as parallel currency. But, it may not last long.
