Currently, I'm doing my thesis on Mapping habitats and Ecosystem services in Dublin parks, Ireland. I was thinking about using the urban population and the level of sound they produce in determining a major aspect of ecosystem service in urban parks. What can be the possibilities of using such factor in determining the habitat biodiversity?
This sounds like a brilliant project to me. I recently heard about a group of researchers that are recording the sounds of the earth, and using citizen scientists to help with the collection by using an application on their smartphones and collecting sounds where they travel. If you haven't already heard of it, the group is called Global Soundscapes, and you can search for it by putting the dot org behind the phrase globalsoundscapes. I think you might find some amazing synergies between what you are intending to do and what is already being done.
I agree with B. Roche. It seems, to me, an amazing idea. Is it feasible right now? I mean does the technology exists?
Never worked with sound recognition but I'm guessing It can be hard work to build an algorithm to recognize so many different origins. How does your prototype work?
"Ecosystem services" are things that are valued by Homo sapiens. Of course diverse soundscapes are valuable to many species of animals (maybe even, then, indirectly, to plants as well) you can set up a remote sensing network of sound recorders with arduino/xbee for a reasonable price. To me, the greater question isn't wether or not other species value the ecosystem services of the soundscape: do WE value them? That's an issue of culture.

I have worked on sound absorption capacities of urban trees .another work is on noise mapping studies in Mumbai.
Work on noise pollution studies within a national park is in progress.
Some plant leaves absorb more sound.
